"Brooklyn" is about the passage and marking of time. I was born and raised in New York and spent most of the last decade in Brooklyn, watching my friends get older and thereby, myself. The most poignant of all were my two best friends having a child who I was dubbed the godfather of, a position that is empty of legal responsibility but one that made me feel attachment, focus and stakes. As he grew his shape changed--his mind expanded with his body and I saw him learn so much more than I knew about, specifically, sea life. He would explain to me the physical characteristics of sharks and his preferences...things I had not considered in my living memory. With each year that he ages I am so drawn to understanding what his next obsession will be, and I long for the day I can show him the things he has inspired in me. I hope to make pieces for/about him every year to mark the time of our growth.
